Enterprise NX- 01 (above) is the fastest and newest ship built by Starfleet. It can reach speeds of up to warp five, although Commander Tucker insisted that it was only that 'on paper' in Fallen Hero, when they had to flee from a Mazarite ship that was trying to capture the fallen Vulcan dignitary that Enterprise was taking back to her people. They did reach warp five, but they could only maintain it for a few minutes, as Enterprise's hull was buckling under the pressure. At the time of Enterprise's launch there is no Federation, and Starfleet 'hasn't been around all that long' (Commander Tucker to T'Pol, in Broken Bow, Part 1). Enterprise is an NX - class ship, the first of its kind. Enterprise  is very different from its later counterparts, as are its systems. For example, the transporter is 'mistrusted' to say the least, by the crew, and only used for bio-transport in emergencies. The ship is much smaller than the Enterprise-E, or even Kirk's Enterprise, the crew quarters are cramped and many share rooms. Enterprise has only two shuttlepods, and although they sport  weapons, the only have impulse drive, not warp as many of the shuttles in The Next Generation do. The Enterprise was launched in April 2151, the finished product of 32 years of work. The launch was hurried due to a crash landing made by a Klingon,  who had been fleeing from a pair of Suliban. The Enterprise managed to return the klingon (Klaang) to Q'onos, therefore accomplishing their mission. The crew had first thought that they would be returning to Earth once their mission was over, but Starfleet decided to allow them to continue their journey. Enterprise is manned by Starfleet's best and brightest, handpicked for the mission. Among them are; Lieutenant Malcolm Reed , Ensign Hoshi Sato, and Commander Charles Tucker. They truly are the first of many.
